
Tennessee River Barbeque Sauce was born in rural east Tennessee along the banks of the beautiful Tennessee River. Owners Don Colyer ("The HoppinGourmet") and his nephew Chuck developed the basic recipe to satisfy their own tastes, and then carefully refined the recipe over a two-month period to arrive at the perfect receipe that satisfies even the most discriminating taste buds. They measured and cooked, remeasured and recooked, threw batches down the drain, and finally came up with the award-winning Tennessee River Barbeque Sauce.
In the beginning, the sauce was primarily used at cookouts at Chuck’s sawmill, but word of the special sauce began to spread and soon lots of people were asking for samples of the sauce to take home. Don and Chuck made batches of the sauce and then gave it all away. They soon realized that there was such a growing demand for the sauce that they had to start charging for it to recover some of their costs. They were apprehensive when they bought their first 150 empty bottles and bulk ingredients, but as demand continued to increase for Tennessee River Barbeque Sauce, the fears quickly subsided.
